Rare Early Mid Century Zuni Fetish Vintage Carved Stone Horse By Old Man Acque   Rare Early Mid Century Zuni Fetish Vintage Carved Stone Horse By Old Man Acque

Mid century carved stone horse with turquoise arrowhead by Zuni artist "Old Man Acque". Like his contemporary Leekya, came to gain the appellation Old Man Acque, as he was known at Zuni He made simple traditional carvings reminiscent of an earlier era.

His fetishes seem friendly and approachable, and convey their subject matter with subtlety. By the 1970's Old Man Acque was undoubtedly the oldest carver still working, although nobody knows exactly when he began carving.

His Stepdaughter Nita Yuselew remembers watching him carve when she was quite young, so it is possible that he started in the 1940's. Like other carvers of his generation a hand-pumped drill, a hand-cranked grinding wheel rasps and files. He polished fetishes painstakingly on his knee with a greased rag. Although he usually carved bears, he sometimes made horses, which he traded to Navajos who used them as talismans to keep there horses safe and healthy. He was a farmer and a well known story teller, but he earned his living from carving fetishes and sheep herding. Most importantly Old Man Acque was also a religious leader. Information gathered from the book "Zuni Fetish Carvers of the 1970s" by Kent McManis. This rare horse carving is from my personal collection. His carvings are hard to find and are rarely offered for sale as most are in museums or private collections. Most likely a found stone, could be travertine.

Possibly carved sometime between the 1950's to the early 1970's. Last two photos are horses.

From the book by Kent McManis. Comes from a smoke free home. Size is 3 1/2 in. Please view all photos as they are part of the description. The item "Rare Early Mid Century Zuni Fetish Vintage Carved Stone Horse By Old Man Acque" is in sale since Friday, August 13, 2021.
