The disorganized US Cavalry was mainly used as a raiding and screening force early in the Civil War, and was often humbled by General Jeb Stuart's superb Confederate horsemen. But when finally put under the command of the fiery General Philip Sheridan in April 1864, the US Cavalry evolved into a hard hitting strike force, capable of spearheading large attacks, and eventually cornering Lee and his army at Appomattox.

Union cavaliers in the Civil War were issued the classic M-1860 light cavalry saber. This US Union Army Civil War EMERSON & SILVER M-1860 LIGHT CAVALRY SABER is in good condition, with some rounding to the blade tip, some sharpening and grinding to the blade edge, some scratching, pitting, and spot patina at each side of the blade, a contrived upward bend to the top end of the guard, some patina to the guard and pommel, some scattered chipping and cracking to the grip, missing all but the bottom strand of brass wire handle wrapping, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the saber is in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it features a 35" upswept blade with a wide fuller for most of its length, sports an elegant brass three branch guard and elongated neck pommel, and is stamped at the ricasso with its maker, the famous "EMERSON / & / SILVER / TRENTON / N. S" marked with serifs at the reverse ricasso, along with the inspector initials and manufacture date "D.

M / 1864" (those initials are also stamped on the bottom of the pommel), boasts the classic dark brown leather covered wood grip, and even carries the original brown leather "bumper pad at the blade/guard join. It's complete with the original US Civil War M-1860 Steel Scabbard in good condition, with a spot dent in the lower front, a rectangular spot of light stick tag residue at the upper front, and with some overall patina and age wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the scabbard is in fine shape, with absolutely no cracking or other damage. Most interestingly, it bears the original steel hanging rings at the upper left side, and the set is a fine example of a very rare, original.
