The idea of using horse cavalry persisted until 1944, with landings on the Chinese coast being considered. Finally, the idea was shelved, and the US Cavalry went into action as infantry. A specially designed leather rifle scabbard had been developed for the M-1 Garand, and it proved just as useful for mechanized warfare as it had been for the Cavalry. Mounted on Jeeps and Harley WLA motorcycles, it kept the Garand handy and ready for action.
This US Army WW2 CAVALRY JEEP HARLEY WLA M-1 GARAND LEATHER RIFLE SCABBARD is in good condition, with some patina to the charge handle cover at top, a fairly deep scuff in the lower left side, heavy overall stiffening in a well formed position, some overall drying, darkening, and scratching, missing the hanging straps, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the scabbard is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough brown leather construction. Most interestingly, it boasts a fully intact brown finished metal charging handle cover at top, sports the original stitched leather "plug" at bottom, and is U." stamped with serifs upside down at the upper right front, along with its maker and date, "JAY-DEE LEATHER PRODUCTS CO.
