Welcome to North Lawrence Antiques in North Lawrence, Ohio. Offered here is an unusual advertising device for the National Biscuit Company. An original, heavy wool horse blanket that promotes the product on each side of the horse as it is worn. This would have been for a large horse as it measures approx. The underside has a padded section with 2 sets of ear holes that would allow for different horse sizes. The blanket shows age appropriate wear including 2 places where there is edge loss. There are some sewn repairs and the belts (which are all in good condition) appear to have been replaced at some time. Some staining, most notably on the underside.
Would be a great wall hanging or area rug. Definitely not something you find very often and considering its use it is hard to imagine it surviving all these years. Extremely rare National Biscuit Company horse blanket dating from the turn of the century, one of only several examples known to exist. In cold weather do not fail to blanket your horse when left standing.
There is no objection to the proper use of the blankets as lap robes when the horse is in motion, but when not used on the horse, or as above, they should be folded up on the seat and not thrown in the back of the wagon. Please visit North Lawrence Antiques on Facebook or Google us for more info.
