NIB VINTAGE WORK HORSE BRAND 500CP PRESSURE LANTERN, RARE. These are getting harder and harder to find in good condition!THE BEST LANTERN MADE BY CJN ADAMS, CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE ONE OF THE SAFEST KEROSENE LANTERNS EVER MADE! CJN Adams made this lantern as a 500 CP Petromax Clone and then they added some safety features that are unique. The flame arrestor assembly and positive fuel shut off valve separate these lanterns from anything else on the market today.
Since they are a Pertromax Clone at their core most parts used to repair Petromax lanterns will work on these lanterns allowing you to keep them in service for many years to come. I was introduced to pressure lanterns by the late Mr. Goldman, a close friend of mine. These are NOS, have never been fired and come in their original packaging. They were made by CJN Adams, and the quality and safety features of these lanterns make them highly sought after.
CJN Adams stopped making lanterns around 1995 and their unique lanterns are getting hard to find. Please check my other listings for more lanterns, parts and accessories. Why is the CJN Adams Work Horse Lantern is different?Read it straight from Mr. It was built by members of the Mennonite Religious Community. It has one very unique feature that makes it a safe, fun lantern to use. It has two control cocks, the lower one offers positive control of the fuel coming up out of the fount on its way to the generator. When this cock is closed, NOTHING gets past it.
If you have opened it too early, and the raw kerosene isn't being vaporized by the generator that is still too cold, you have a'flair up'. Well, with the Work Horse, you simply shut down the control cock and the'problem' goes away.
The second control knob, just above the main fuel cock, is used to activate the'pricker' and you all know what that's about. I have used these lanterns for years and find them really great to use. With the main control cock you can rest assured that the lantern won't become an instant Barbeque. The lantern also has a novel, heated intake manifold that draws fresh, oxygenated air from the bottom of the'cage' to insure a clean, good burn at the mantle, (see images).
I always use the rapid torch as there is so much brass to be heated. You can, of course, use the alcohol pre-heater cup, but I find it takes at least 2 sessions before the lantern is ready to fire. With the rapid torch, I run it for a solid minute to really heat the generator before I open the control cock for ignition. In short, I KNOW the mantle will fire correctly as the generator is good and hot and ready to do its job. I could not agree more - The positive fuel shut-off knob is one of a kind, no other lantern gives you the ability to positively shut off the fuel in the event of a flare up - none.
To find another Petromax Lantern with a positive fuel shut off valve you need to look for a Model 825, which has not been in production since the 1930's. The increased surface area of the flame arrestor makes these lanterns safer and easier to light than all lanterns on the market today. If you send fuel to the mantle to early during the preheat process the flame arrestor helps redirect most flare ups down and away from the hood. Once the lantern is burning the. Flame arrestor draws fresh air in from the bottom on the lantern to insure a clean, good burn at the mantle.
They also have a schrader valve built into the fuel cap allowing you to pressurize them rapidly with a bicycle pump if you do not want to use the built-in hand pump! Look at the photos and compare this lantern to a Petromax - there is no comparison only improvements! Ron Brown recently reviewed this lantern in his book -'Book 6: KEROSENE PRESSURE LANTERNS'. His comments can be found on page 92.
I own a Work Horse and it is truly a superior lantern. This book (and his entire series) is a must have for all lantern enthusiasts. Check out this video to see me start up an older'used' WHB Lantern. As the fuel in the generator starts to vaporize watch the flame arrestor do it's job!
